TRAI had last week announced some harsh recommendation for the upcoming 2G spectrum auction which not only would affect the new comers to the Indian telecom space but also affect the incumbents when they renew their licenses in coming years. Since upon Supreme Courts order all 2G licenses were cancelled, Uninor has taken TRAI to the apex court to challenging the recommendations made by it.

Uninor thinks that the TRAI recommendations would create artificial scarcity of Spectrum which would lead to steep hike in the spectrum price. Also Uninor is of the view that as per Supreme Courts order dated February 2nd, all spectrum that the government after cancellation of license of as many as 8 operators should be auctioned, nothing should be kept back.

“Today, we sought the Supreme Court’s permission to file an interim application to bring this to the court’s attention. The court has allowed us to file an application and stated that it is open to hearing our arguments, ”Uninor said in a statement.

Earlier Uninor has clearly said that if the TRAI recommendations are accepted they would be forced to leave India. And even the parent company back home in Norway, Telenor has written down the whole of Indian Operations as a precautionary measures.

Personally, we at telecomGyaan feels that, Uninor should stay – the COMPETITION should remain in India. Other wise we might see more tariffs hike just like Vodafone Postpaid users.
