Draft National Telecom Policy 2011 announced, Free Roaming among other benefits to come

Mr. Kapil Sibal, the Minister of Communications & Information Technology, today presented the Draft NTP 2011. At a press meet at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi, Mr. Sibal presensted the draft for further persual and also a dedicated webpage has been launched for comments on the Draft NTP 2011.

Among many new rules & regulations, there are two major Good News from the Consumer Point of view. National Roaming would be a thing of past if NTP 2011 get implemented. The draft of NTP 2011 Strive to create One Nation – One License across services and service areas thereby abolishing roaming charges completely. Another major news is that it would facilitate the Mobile Number Porting between circle. It means you would be able to port your number to a differnet circle/state as well. For eg. A subcriber from Delhi can now port to any operator in Mumbai.

Other Highlights of the Draft NTP 2011 are

-Increase in Rural Teledensity from 35 to 100 by 2020 Proposed
-Broadband on Demand and 600 Million Connections by 2020
-Efforts Towards ‘Right to Broadband’
-One Nation – One License and One Nation – Free Roaming
-Additional 300 MHz Spectrum by 2017 and Another 200 MHz by 2020 to be made Available
-Seamless Voice, Data, Multimedia and Broadcasting Services on Converged Networks
-Eighty Percent Telecom Sector Demand through Domestic Manufacturing with a Value Addition of Sixty Five Percent by 2020
